Finally a home game! After the COVID caused one-leg appearance in Namur last season, BBC Gréngewald Hueschtert is looking forward to its second participation and therefore also the first home game in the EuroCup Women competition! The team will meet for the second leg game of the Qualifiers the Italian team Banco Sardegna Sassari on Wednesday September 29th in Niederanven.

EuroCup Women - a FIBA competition with a long history, also with participation from Luxembourg. Looking back on the last thirty years, there have been several clubs from Luxembourg that have competed in this competition. From 1990 until now, Luxembourgish teams have played in forty-seven games - out of these forty-seven match ups, the Luxembourgish teams could unfortunately only win three times a game.

Hence, it is certainly not an easy task, but a challenge that the responsible from BC Gréngewald Hueschtert believe even more Luxembourgish teams should take up. Almost all participating teams are fully professional, and the rosters are very international. Even if according to EuroCup Regulations some limitations exist, the competition is open to European and Non-European players and therefore allows a sporting comparison at the highest level.

So, one could wonder why a club is taking this challenging step, especially as it also implies a high organizational and financial involvement. BBC Gréngewald Hueschtert, which will celebrate its 75th birthday in 2022 and thus ranks amongst the oldest Basketball clubs of Luxembourg, aims to continuously grow and improve in terms of performance. After the women’s team has won the national championship during the 2018/2019 season, the responsible of the club decided to expand this development to the international level. The club has a strong base of young players, what is also underlined by the high participation of players in the different national squads. The goal is that a combination of experienced and young players will allow to make the next steps nationally and internationally. It is clear, that this will not happen overnight, patience and perseverance are required in order to move forward. The players, the team as well as the club will grow with each of these international experience and participation.

Finally, after thirteen (long) years, there will be again an international home game of a FIBA club competition in Luxembourg.
